Common Headlock (physical attacks cont) MMA Training, Jujitsu, and Mauy Thai

One of the all-time favorite techniques among people engaging in a street fight is the common headlock. We say the "common headlock" to differentiate the poorly applied headlocks used in street fights by untrained people from the powerful headlocks used by trained grapplers. The basic idea of all headlocks is the same. When you control the head of an opponent, you control his whole body; since the spinal column runs down from the head to the middle of the body. When a trained grappler uses any form of a proper headlock, it is a powerful form of control that can effectively immobilize, control, or throw an opponent. Untrained fighters try to mimic this kind of control by grappling the head as best they can and attempting to control it. Unfortunately, they usually do a poor job.

Their intention is to hold the head with one arm and pound away with strikes with the other arm, hitting the face and side of the head. Other times, they attempt to pull the head down and drag the opponent down tot he ground. The problem with these common headlock attacks is that they usually gain insufficient control of the head and upper body. As a result, a person with adequate technical skills can slip out of the headlock relatively easily and get quickly into a position behind his opponent so that he can get on the attack.
