The headbutt is a highly effective technique that can have devastating results on your opponent if done correctly. The idea is that an attacker steps into his opponent and slams his forehead into the nose or mouth without "winding up" by drawing his head back. Sometimes fighters grip the opponent's head and immobilize it, thus creating a truly devastating headbutt.
The key to defending the headbutt, however, is distance. By keeping away from your opponent, you make it impossible for him to hit you with such a strike. It is in the clinch and on the ground where the headbutt becomes a real problem. You can negate a headbutt attack in the clinch by working into dominant clinches yourself to gain inside control. On the ground, the headbutt is most commonly used when your opponent is in your guard. To prevent this situation, place your open hand on his forehead or hug his head tight to your chest. These positions control his head movement and effectively negate the headbutt.
