Most people lack training in the combat arts. They fight only a few times in their adult lives. It is no surprise, then, that when they do fight, they do son in a way that is bereft of skill. In fact, the majority of people in a street fight throw punches rather than any other technique since a punch is the most commonly know method of hurting another person. These punches area almost always wild swings from out wide, thrown with great enthusiasm but with little skill.
Fortunately, these wild swings are easy to avoid. If you practice the correct method of striking and defense in the few-movement phase along with sparring, you will find it an easy matter to avoid these sloppy punches and thus counter strongly. To block the punches, you can simply employ any if the standard defenses to strikes. An even better reaction is to forgo defense altogether. Instead, take advantage of the wise, slow, swinging motion by quickly blasting straight punches into your opponent's chin, knowing that your straight punches will arrive on target sooner than his wide, looping punches. Another alternatives is to close distance under the punches and either clinch or take him down. From there, you can go to work while in the clinch or on the ground.
